Is Modesty (Haya) all about Hijab?
Be Modest In Everything
We all heard this since our childhood that we should be modest in clothing, speech, and our behavior. So I did a google a quick google search what does it in means; Modesty, sometimes known as demureness, is a mode of dress and deportment which intends to avoid the encouraging of sexual attraction in others. The word "modesty" comes from the Latin root modestus which means "keeping within measure". Standards of modesty are culturally and context-dependent and vary widely.
But Modesty in Islam is not limited to Hijab or an abaya as perceived by the west, Muslims should possess both an inner and outer modesty. This is reflected in once behavior, speech, and appearance, and includes being mindful of God at all times.
Modesty (haya) in the Qur’an
Islam takes the concept of modesty even further. Modesty in Islam is known as haya, a word, which describes both shyness and a deeper modesty that is based on faith. A sense of haya should affect a Muslim’s conduct before God, before others and even when one is alone.
In the Holy Qur’an, God says: “O children of Adam, We have provided you with garments to cover your bodies, as well as for luxury. But the best garment is the garment of righteousness. These are some of God’s signs, that they may take heed.” (Al-Araf 7:26)
Modesty in the Hadith
A number of narrated prophetic traditions (ahadith) illustrate the significance of modesty. a hadith links modesty to faith: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Faith consists of more than seventy branches. And Haya (modesty) is a part of faith.” (Al-Bukhari)
Islam is a religion of moderation and balance; it does not expect women alone to uphold society’s morality and dignity. Rather, Islam asks men and women to strive mutually to create a healthy social environment of practical values and morality. In short, the concept of modesty in Islam is holistic and applies to both men and women. The ultimate goal is to please God and to maintain a wholesome and stable society. (excerpt from whyislam.com)
Muslims are not limited to the middle east or subcontinent, we will find Muslims in European countries which I can't even spell correctly. The style of Abaya differ from one country to another and there is no specific ruling on what should be the design or color but it should be loose covering the complete body.
We Hifza Apparel bring you the modest wear that matches the trend without you giving up your traditions.
Note: The rulings on hijab differ from madhhab to madhhab and a lay person to scholarly women. No one should be judged on their outer appearance.
